New House, New Chandelier
Published on March 28, 2008 By Texas Wahine In Home Improvement

Our new house is lovely, but it definitely has some issues (the most glaring of which is the horrendous red carpet throughout the house!) and one of details that bothered me most was the cheesy, cheap looking chandelier in the dining room.

The pic is not great, so it's hard to tell but the chandelier was really corny.  Particularly since we have mostly wrought iron type accents in our home.

I painted the insides of the (umm...squares?  I don't know the technical term) a color called centennial blue because our living room/dining room/kitchen colors are greens and blues.  I am actually thinking I need to change it because I don't feel like it goes as well as I would like.  I was trying to pick up on the blue in the countertops, but I'm not sure I love it.

Last night we hit up Home Depot and picked up a new chandelier (and a ceiling fan for our bedroom...we currently have NO light fixture in there because the previous owners tore it out).  I had initially this lovely chandelier:

After looking at it in person, though, it seemed pretty overwhelming for the space we wanted it in, and we weren't in love with the candle-like bulbs.

I found something else I liked for far less and after much agonizing and debate, we got the less expensive, less ornate one.  I couldn't find a pic online and my camera is not working right now, but I will update with a pic as soon as I can.

Adrian has never done a project like this...he doesn't mess with electricity...but the HD rep assured us that it was very easy and simple to do, so we brought home our goodies and Adrian got to work.  He took the old chandelier out, assembled the new one, and installed it.  With a minimum of cursing.

I am really pleased with how it turned out.  It makes a huge difference in the feel of the entire downstairs.  I think when we get more things done on the house it's really going to look so nice and natural in here.

We also set up a survey to have the carpet replaced and picked out our carpet.  We just went with cheap, neutral carpet.  "Warm Sand".  The carpet has to be ordered so it will be a couple of weeks before this comes to fruition but I know that will completely change the look of the house (for the better!).

I am trying to find cheap ways to make a visual impact and make things nice looking and functional since we can't afford to go too crazy on home improvements.  We have ideas and dreams for things that will be more $$ but for now those things are just dreams.

This place is really starting to feel like home and feel "ours".

When I get more done and can get a camera working I will post pics of befores and afters.  I'm pretty excited.  I'm hoping Adrian will take me to Hobby Lobby today so I can look at swags.  I also need a new rug for the dining room, but I may just have to "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without".

It sounds like fun, making your house your own.  Paint is probably the cheapest thing you can do that can make a huge difference.  Have fun nesting!

That chandelier is big.  I think it is more suited for an outdoor porch light.

Here is one that is similar but smaller:   http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?DeptID=25438&CatID=38155&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=132d0bf&ProdSeq=15&Cat=chandeliers&Dep=Home+Accents&PCat=LIGHTING&PCatID=26079&RefPage=ProductList&Sale=&ProdCount=21&RecPtr=&ShowMenu=&TTYP=&ShopBy=0&RefPageName=WindowSolutionHOM%252Easpx&RefCatID=26079&RefDeptID=25438&Page=2&CmCatId=25438|26079|38155   It's also only $79.00

Those "boxes" are the inside panel of your wainscoting.  (Sorry, I originally wanted to be an interior designer until I got a bad alcohol habit and got kicked out of University....but that's a whole other story...)

This house sounds like it will be awesome when you are done.  It's so exciting to hear about your new start!

I have what looks pretty close to the same cheesy lighting you have.  I have two of these not so lovely lights.  One is in the formal dining room and the other in the kitchen nook area.  Both are probably very inexpensive for the contractors to put in.

We have way too many things ahead of lighting at the moment.  So I may keep my eyes open at flea markets/garage sales.  My next door neighbor had a fabulous chandelier that she got at a garage sale.

Right now we are still buying furniture and putting up much needed extra cabinets we got at HD that will fill up the garage and laundry areas.

There's always something to do when it comes to the house.  It's never ending but it's fun to see the changes as you go.

Have fun.

I can't wait to see pictures.

Sand colored carpet is actually a great idea...it goes with everything..plus you can buy 5 by 8' carpets with color to place in front of your couch for added punch.

I'm excited for you Tex.

Wow, that really is an ugly light fitting. The place we currently rent has probably the worst fittings in the lounge room I've ever seen. From a distance, they look like cut glass when in reality they're molded plastic and particularly gross.

I'm so pleased you're settling in to you new home and getting organised. It must be a really exciting time for all of you. How are the boys and the little girl liking their new home?

Out closer to Belton, there was a carpet warehouse place that would bind carpet....if you want to check it out for rug options.  They sold remnants....

Now I feel guilty becuase I keep pretending I don't see the cheesy light in MY dining room!

Brandie,

I've lived in my house now for three years, and we just took down the tacky, brass chandelier over spring break. The new brushed nickel light fixture looks much better! Chris tried to install a ceiling fan but hit a snag, and now we just have wires sticking out of the ceiling. Home improvement is so much fun! Tell Adrian Congratulations! Minimal cursing is quite an accomplishment! The house looks beautiful! I can't wait to see more pictures. Perhaps we can come visit soon.
