HOMEOWNERS!!!

We checked out of the terrible, smelly HOJO we were staying in Thursday morning and wasted some time until we could pick the boys up from school and then go to the closing.  We signed all the paperwork and prepared to move into our first home.  Woohoo!

Not so fast!

The house we've bought is a VA Repo, so we got a great deal on it.  It has a few issues, but nothing major, and MOSTLY just cleaning with a tad bit of repairs here and there.  Unfortunately, the VA guy in whereever he did NOT allow the Realtor to give us the keys on closing.

WTF?!?

Our Realtor said this is first time he's EVER had this happen.  We were stuck with all our luggage crammed into the Explorer and two borrowed vehicles to stow somewhere while we waited for the keys.  The VA guy wanted to see the paperwork and be assured of funding, so the keys wouldn't be released until he approved.  We were up a creek since we had literally no where to go.  And to make matters worse, the VA was out of his office.

Our Realtor called and called and called.  In the meantime we parked one vehicle at the house (shhh!), one at the mall and ran errands.  I mailed a check at the Post Office (did you know they have machines accept debit cards and give stamps now?) and we scheduled water service for the house.  It was getting close to 5 pm and we were driving around and feeling desperate.

Finally our Realtor called with GREAT news.  We could go pick up the keys!!

We dumped our things off at the house and made a trip to Wal-Mart for cleaning supplies, necessary household items, some snacks, and a futon.

It was the best feeling ever to sleep in the house we own, even though there's cat hair on every conceivable surface and no blinds or curtains!

Our appliances were delivered on Friday, and the guy came to turn on the water at the same time.  Lucky break!  Washing laundry in my own machine was AMAZING.  I never thought I would be so excited about doing laundry!

We are roughing it (kind of) right now, just cleaning and fixing and painting.  Our household goods are being delivered Thursday and internet/phone/cable get set up tomorrow.  It's so exciting.  I LOVE this house!

I will post pics soon...my camera is acting nutty (it says it needs batteries and shuts itself off even when i put brand new batteries in it).

Congratulations on your new home.  I remember my first new home and how excited I was including getting my first washing machine as well.  Until then I was going to the laundromat since we were living in a small renta.   It was awesome being able to wash clothes at my convenience having a small baby at home at the time.

Now you're going to have lots of new things to blog on.

Looking forward to the pics.

Yeah Brandie! I am so excited for you and your family. Being a homeowner is a wonderfully infuriating experience. I mowed my yard this morning just to find out we have a leak in our sprinkler system and the fence in the backyard is about to fall down. Lots of fun! I hope your journey through homeownership is as entertaining as mine! Love ya!

Congrats, Tex on your new home. It had to be a great feeling when you were handed the keys then when you first walked in the house.

Good luck with everything.

Congratulations!  It is exciting.  You can tape newspaper up over the windows until you can get all your window coverings.  I just can't sleep when I feel like people could be looking in at me.

Congrats Tex, how I envy you. I look forward to my own home soon. What better time than now. I do have a lot of things to get out of the way first before I venture into that world but look forward to it.

I'll be posting an article on my dream house soon, you're welcome to check it out when I post it.

Congrats! Sorry the VA guy had to stress you out like that (not like moving isn't stressful enough).

Welcome home!
