Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

How do I always manage to do stuff like this?

I was getting a jump start on bill paying today...I like to go ahead and set up the payments before payday so I don't forget and end up paying something late. So, I entered my amounts, set the date for payday, and clicked submit.

Or so I thought.

I forgot to set the date for my phone/internet bill...so it went with the default option. Today.

The bill is being paid right now. At this very minute.

And this is a problem because...

I have (had) about $140 in the checking account. That's not a lot to some folks, but it's plenty to last til payday (Friday) for me and the kids. In fact, I've experienced far worse right-before-payday snafus and account balances. I was pretty proud of the $140 figure. I even bragged about it on the phone to my hubby last night.

My phone/DSL bill is BIG. It's not car payment big (heh, I'm smart and split my car payment between the two paydays), but still...additionally, I tend to overpay bills just for kicks (well, not JUST for kicks, but it's nice to pay more when you have it so that the next bill is smaller in case you don't), so now I've got about $50 in the checking account for 3 days.

That's not too bad. Not great, but not too bad.

But wait!

I then, with full knowledge of my payment mishap, went to the Shopette and bought a magazine, snacks, and some cereal bars.

That left me with around $30. Not yet a dire situation, but certainly not impressive.

But wait!

On the way home with my purchases I realized that the debit from the gas I got yesterday wasn't on my statement.

So here I am. With about $15 for three days.

And it didn't have to be this way. What a bummer. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

You think the school will let me pay for my kids' lunches by showing them my boobs? No? Really? You're sure? Luckily they've got some money in their lunch accounts, but they'd better go easy on the extra milks for the next coupla days.

I never have $140 sitting in my account 3 days before I get paid, so I would be proud of it too. I'm sorry but I did laugh at your dilemma... It sounds like the sort of thing I would do and then I'd be D'ohing all over the place.

That's EXACTLY it! Yes! D'oh! That's what it was...d'oh, d'oh, d'oh! Hehe.

As for your creative way of getting the school to provide your boys lunches, if it were me, they'd be eating for free for some time to come.

Hahaha...men can't resist the lure of boobies, can they? Hehe.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention...

SUBLIME ROCK!

Absolutely. What I Got is my favorite, but they have (had) a lot of other really great stuff, too.

PS - I got your email, and I'll let you know what I thought shortly. I'm honored that you chose to share those with me.

InBloom:
Yikes. I'm going crazy with bills myself...hard to keep up with sometimes. I should sign up for my bank's epay system; maybe I'll look into it.

I really like bill pay. I save money on checks and stamps...save a lot of time...and I don't have to worry about whether the mail will run slow and the payment will be late.

I enter the amount, pick a date (must remember to pay close attention on this step, hehe)...it tells me how many days it will take from the day the payment is sent til it's received, and then hit submit. I also like being able to confirm the transaction and keep a record of it.

Also, I can't believe how much our water and electric bills have been lately...it's crazy. If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat, too...waiting for PayDay Friday.

We're very fortunate in that we don't have to worry with any utility bills...all that's included in our housing pay. I feel for you, though! That kind of stuff can be crazy high in Texas!

Toblerone:
I'm with maso on that one.

Why am I not surprised?

The fact you mention the boobs thing along with your kids having extra milks sent me on a dangerous train of though towards induced lactation and some kind of solution .

Hahaha...I took a twisted Barbie quiz a while back and discovered that I would be Lactation Barbie...haha...the quiz even had an overflowing-chested Barbie wearing a Got Milk? t-shirt, hehe.

Luckily you have been spared this train of thought as it got derailed by some deeply buried sense of good taste that popped up to say hello for the first time in years.

You're a cutie, Toblerone.

eric:
AAAAACCCKKKKKK!!!! Flashback alert, I haven't heard the word "shopette" in, oh my gosh...15 years!!! Thanks Tex, while my Air Force career was short lived, you just made me realize how long ago it was and how vivid the memories can be.

It's a weird word, doncha think?

I should know this, but are you Army or Air Force?

We're Army.

Dr.Guy:
Well, there is always Mac and Cheese.

I buy that stuff in bulk! Haha. First we have tacos. Then we have hot dogs and Mac and Cheese. Finally, we have Spicy Mac with left over meat and left over Mac and Cheese! It's a brilliant plan if I do say so myself!

Dr.Guy:
That is why I dont use Debit cards. I use a credit card so they can keep track of my expenses and then pay it off each month.

Haha...I've not quite reached the level of self control required to do that!

Foreverserenity:
Recently though a new banking law went into effect where if you write a check and present it, it comes out of your account the moment it's presented. You can thank the credit card companies for that. Not all companies are up and running with the new changes though. I guess the thing would be is to know the policies of the companies you deal with!

I actually wrote an article about that back when the new law went into effect. I wondered if it would change the way a lot of Americans managed their budgets!

For some reason, many checks we write here take a while to clear even with the new law. You would think that it would be electronically debited from our account, but it seems like they are still doing it the old fashion way in many places here.

I like that survivor suggestion Tex, the kids would go for it! Hang in there, only two more days to go. I had $20 in my pocket this morning and most of it went to buying gas! I'll bite my finger nails til then!

Shades had a great idea, didn't she? It's not too long. We can make it!

Moderateman:
hon? "floating" checks is against the law, but you are right it's only a crime IF YA GET CAUGHT. heh

Against the law but very common! You should see the commissary the day or two before payday!

WRONG........... God I hate telling you that your wrong.. sob. sob.. sniff... boo-hoo.

Hehe. Aren't you a sweetie!

HAHA! I have $16.26. And that's only gotta last me one day! If I go to bed at 10 pm tonight...I can spend...let's see...$1.16 an hour! Woohoo!

Hey ours went in today, a day early! Strange.

Can I be sexist and say that is a gender thing?

Perhaps I should check my account again? Hehe.

Our bank is on the mainland, so we usually get ours a bit before some of the folks here who use local banks, which is nice.

Dr.Guy:

Of course you can! But I'm going offer a rebuttal of...yeah, but my husband's worse than I am about spending money!

Ok, with a check not debit card- you can go to commisary and get the basics

The commisary here announced a new plan (I think it's DECA wide) to instantly deduct the money from your account. No more floating. PLUS due to this high number of bounced checks in the new system....they go to the unit and nail your husband at work if you try to float checks.... OUCH!

With the new check law, it makes sense that the commissary would catch up with that. I don't think it's a bad thing at all. It just means that a lot of people are going to have to get their budgets in check so that don't have to rely on next payday's money to pay for the previous payday's food.

I wonder if the application of this law will result in higher instances of military families getting payday advance loans at all the seedy places surrounding the bases?

Haha, no kidding.

Apart, we are both good with money. Together, watch out! But I'm the more conservative spender of the two of us. Hehe.
