At least Adrian was home for it
Published on April 8, 2005 By Texas Wahine In Home & Family
I never thought this would happen.

I played rough and took spills my entire childhood and never broke a bone. Adrian did the same...no broken bones. Xavier's seven, and while he has had stitches, he's never had a broken bone.

Orian has always been the tough guy. He'd fall and scrape a knee and look up and say, "I'm fine." It was always "I'm fine."

But not tonight.

We took the kids bowling, and were having a great time. If you've never watched children bowl, you are really missing out. It's some entertaining stuff. The boys each have their own style. Xavier puts his fingers in the holes, and then timidly approaches and lets the ball go off in a random direction at the last moment. Orian excitedly carries the ball up to the line and uses all his body weight to roll it forcefully down the lane...all the while jumping and laughing.

Two baskets of chicken poppers, one basket of fries and one of onion rings, one grilled cheese sandwich, two Root Beers, one large Coke, $6 worth of jukebox songs and nine and half frames later we were throwing our shoes at the guy behind the counter and heading out to the Acute Care Clinic.

It was Orian's last frame of the game and he was doing his usual routine. He scooped the ball up and began carrying it out to the lane. He was skipping around (despite constant reminders not to...he gets so darn excited). His foot caught on the step that separates the "sitting" section from the "actual bowling" section. The second we saw his foot catch, Adrian and I both bolted toward him, but neither one of us got there in time (and for the record, Adrian got there before me...damn his physical fitness).

Not only did he trip and fall, the hand he put out to catch his fall ended up smashed between the floor and his bright orange eight pound bowling ball (yes, it was the lightest one they had for the kids). From there his face landed neatly on top of the hand and bowling ball sandwich he had created.

We knew immediately that he was hurt. It's hard to explain, but you just KNOW when your kid is really hurt...sometimes before they actually are hurt.

Adrian scooped him up and hugged him tightly while he cried. His crying was a red flag. There was no "I'm fine." I begged to hold him but Adrian told me no, and he rushed him off to the bathroom check him out.

The palm of his little hand was cut a little bit and bleeding, one of his fingers was puffy beyond belief, and he had a little owie on his lip. Adrian comforted him and examined him for a long time before he brought him back to me and told me that he felt like he needed X-Rays on his finger.

Orian is now home with a "robot arm" to stabilize his fractured finger. Fractured finger. Gah. He's been so tough, though. He keeps telling me that it doesn't hurt and talking about the light from the X-Ray (Adrian informed me that he and Orian are both now sterile, hahahaha). After I had baked the injured baby some cookies (which by the way, were declared the best. cookies. ever.) and brought him a glass of milk we were alarmed to realize that Orian had hurt his...eating hand. Not the eating hand!

In a few days we'll have to take him in to our primary care physician to have his finger looked at again. Until then, I'll be doing a lot of butt wiping and possibly nose picking (it's his picking hand, too).

Here's a pic of Orian and his robot arm (which he has been chewing on already...note the bite marks):

greywar: hehe...no joke

little whip:
I'm sure he will be fine, Tex, kids are tuff.

Yeah, he's been very good about it...he does ask for his pain med when he's hurting, but overall he is the same old Orian...jumping around and attempting to climb things with his bandaged hand, hahahaha

And remember, you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose...or your kids'.

bwahahahahhahaa...well...while I've never picked my child's nose, Adrian has had to retrieve various items that were lodged in there (the strangest: a very small toy Gundam sword...ack!).

trina:
that's the weirdest thing I've ever seen - I've never seen one of those before

Yeah, me too...it seemed like overkill to me, even, but hey...I'm no doctor.

and eeww gross

hahahahahaha

Mom: Thanks.

dharma:
Boys are boys, and in the course of being boys, they get hurt. We have been to the ER numerous times with ours for busted chins, busted lips, split noses and eyebrows, a dog bite, a broken nose, a broken arm, and beads stuck up Davey's nose (twice).

Wow! I'm feeling fortunate after reading that list!

Nice robot arm, though......very cool!!

Hehe...robot arms rock.

Jill:
Poor guy! I know exactly what you mean about knowing when they are really hurt. My boys are 8 and 4 and we live about 1 mile from urgent care

I knew you (and the other moms and dads here) would understand what I meant completely! 8 and 4? Any major mishaps yet?

Best wishes to the little guy. Luckily they heal soooo fast at that age.

Thanks. I'm hoping it will heal up quickly...we had a lot of fun plans for Adrian's leave and some of them may have to be postponed because he won't be able to fully enjoy them.

Danny:
Let's just hope Xavier does want a 'robot arm' of his own

Hahahahahhaa...I hadn't considered that one...

And a good time to learn to be ambidextrous. I hope he heals well.

Yeah, it's been funny watching him wield a fork at dinner...hehe...

and thanks.

Myrrander:
Hey Brandie, tell the little guy I hope he feels better

Will do!

and hope you and Adrian managed to get your hearts out of your throats.

Excellent way to describe it...Adrian was showing me his finger last night and it is so huge...it's such a scary thing...but he seems to be doing well.

Toblerone:
I hope the poor little guy recovers soon and doesn't end up with a permanant fear of ten pin bowling (which incidently is the only sport I have won a trophy for in partnership with JU citizen Champas Socialist )

Thanks...and I know it hasn't affected his desire to bowl because on the way home from the Acute Care Clinic he was crying and asking to go back and finish bowling! Hahahaha...

Kudos on the bowling skills!

Like you and Adrian I too have escaped breaking any bones in my childhood or in fact my life despite some valiant attempts. Full marks for Orian, he really did it in style, that'll make a great story to tell his friends later.

That he did...hahhahaha...everything he does, he does big!

BlueDev:
Glad he is doing all right after that. And hey, that robot arm looks freaking awesome. Boys dig that kind of stuff. Best wishes for him.

Thanks.

little whip:
That child has the most amazing eyelashes! Ever think of modeling?

He actually gets compliments on his lashes everywhere we go...they're really long but also very dark and curled...he gets it from his daddy, who also has ungodly long eyelashes. Thanks!

citahellion:
Actually, little whip, I've noticed that lots of small kids have disproportionately large eyelashes. it's like the lashes come in at full adult size and you just have to grow into them or something. Krystal is the same way, she has gorgeous lashes.

I'm sure you're right (you always are, hahahaha). He may eventually "grow into" them...but I'm holding out hope since his daddy's lashes are so long, too.

And that Robot Arm(tm) is a really cool payoff for the pain of a broken finger. If I'd known I could get something like that, I wouldn't have waited until I was 32 to break a bone.

Hahahahahha...well, with my luck if I'd broken something I'd have gotten something lame instead of a cool robot arm...

Plus, it is definitely good training to use his off hand. The world needs more lefties!

Adrian agrees with that one!

TheFazz:
I'm telling you, bowling is one of the most dangerous sports out there!

Hahahahhaa...at least he wasn't drinking...it could have been much worse! (hehe...disclaimer: my four year old doesn't actually drink alcohol, that was a joke)

I haven't broken a bone yet, so I consider myself fortunate. I came close a few times, but luckily they resulted in nothing more than a damaged ligament.

Well, you still have time...just make sure you break a finger so you can get the special robot arm the medical community is currently offering...hehe

Hope he heals quickly.

Thanks

ForeverSerenity:
Whew! Here's to hoping he heals quickly. And yep, good luck with the butt wiping!

Thank you. And luckily, he's been able to perform his...um...duties...without assistance. (I dodged a bullet on that one!)

Marcie:
When I broke my humerus in a car accident in 1999, after a month in the splint I was wearing I wasn't healing they put me in this god-awful 30 pound cast that hung around my neck with that medical cloth crap and some protective foam on the part that went around my neck. It was this horrible, hideous bright blue cast that had an "outrigger"...a hook that that medical cloth could hang onto...

Wow...bless your heart. That sounds awful. Thirty pounds! Geez! How long did you have to wear that thing?

Oh lord...oh lord....your poor little man and his robot arm. I hope that you're all feeling better about the situation soon...

Thanks!

Dynosoar:
So, have you spoke with an attorney yet?

Hahhahahaa...if we were the suing type, we'd be rolling in it by now...this is not the first time he's been injured in a way that could be pinned on a place of business...hahaha

Common sense should prevail upon the management to provide age appropriate bowling balls...

I do agree with that...I have asked a couple of times if they had anything lighter and more kid-friendly, once the answer was just no and the other time they told me that they used to have some 6 lb balls but had gotten rid of them (which makes no sense since they have so many families with kids bowling there). But what can you do?

for a fee

Hehe...of course...

Good luck with the cast, the only problem we experienced with our boys and broken bones was the stench emmitting from the cast after a few days ( dirty gym socks compared to roses )

Thanks...right now he's just got it bandaged and immobilized...I'm not sure if he'll end up with a cast when we take him back for his evaluation next week...it's just that one finger...but there's some concern that the fracture extends to something (don't remember what it's called)that is still growing or something like that. We'll see.

The smell sounds awful...but living with three guys, I am used to rotten smells!

A growth plate thingy? He's so little yet that he's still got lots of cartilege...so I guess if the fracture is in or near a growth plate they'd want him in a cast or something similar longer...
on Apr 09, 2005
That sucks, cool rock-em sock-em robot cast though.......and not everybody can grow up with cool ex-bowling scar stories........

"Like, dude, no crap, there I was, bottom of the tenth frame, right? No pressure, but everything's riding on me to win the game, I take my stance, roll forward with the ball, when POW!!!!.........right out of nowhere........."

Yeah, I'm hoping he doesn't end up with a real cast...and it is one the growth plate things that they're worried about...hahaha...they gave the specific name for it, but I'm too lazy to go find the paper to look up what it is...

Soooo true...he's already pretty good at recanting his tale...and I'm sure it will only get more elaborate and exciting as he has time to perfect it...hahahha

Hehe...that made me laugh. I do that kind of thing all the time...get all sorts of weird expressions on my face when I'm reading stuff...

He's already feeling so much better, and we'll find out this week exactly how well his finger is healing. Thanks for your concern.

Oh that's good! And you know about him biting the robot hand? Heh, i used to chew on postcards corners, i know it sounds like the weirdest thing to chew on but postcards feel like chewing gum with that first bite, lol! Doesnt taste the same i know but oh well!

I laugh out loud a lot too, Darren doesnt understand how i can do that. It's just when i'm really into something it shows!

Ahhh, he breaks his finger and now he's got a perfect brother-bashing weapon.

Hehe...that's not so weird...I used to eat flavored chapstick...and in junior high some kids used to sell cinnamon flavored paper (yes, I ate that too...)

I think that's awesome. From reading your blogs and comments and seeing your pics, you seem like someone who is very vivacious and animated...I love that!

Hehe...you must have kids...how'd you know that would be the first thing he used it for? hahahhaaha
